The Four Elements, and What Each Tends to Mean
Western astrology groups the 12 zodiac signs into four elements, three signs each. Fire(Aries, Leo, Sagittarius) is traditionally read as bold, direct, and quick to act. Earth(Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn) as grounded, practical, and steady. Air (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius) as idea-driven, social, and communicative. Water (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces) as intuitive, emotionally attuned, and often quietly perceptive.
These are broad personality tendencies, not fixed rules — plenty of Earth signs are spontaneous, plenty of Water signs are decisive. The element is best read as a default operating mode, the style you tend to fall back on under normal circumstances, not a cage.
What to Do With Your Element
- Notice where you push against the stereotype. A Fire sign who's actually quite cautious in relationships is still useful information — it tells you where you diverge from the default pattern, which is often more interesting than where you match it.
- Elements explain a lot of relationship friction. If you're curious how your element interacts with someone else's, the Compatibility tool builds directly on this.
- Element is one layer of a bigger picture. Your Sun sign's element is a starting sketch — a full Birth Chart adds your Moon sign's element too, which is often where the real nuance lives.
