How Name Numerology Is Calculated
Your expression number comes from the Pythagorean numerology system, which assigns each letter of the alphabet a number 1–9 (A=1, B=2, C=3, and so on, cycling back to 1 at J) and adds up every letter in your full birth name, reducing the total the same way a life path number is reduced — down to a single digit, unless the sum lands on a master number (11, 22, or 33), which traditionally stays unreduced.
Where your Life Path number comes from your birth date, your expression number comes from your name — which is why numerology treats them as describing two different things: life path as your core life theme, expression as how you naturally come across and express yourself to others.
Using Your Expression Number Well
- Use your full birth name, not a nickname. Traditional practice calculates from the name given at birth, on the theory that it carries the original imprint — a married or chosen name is sometimes calculated separately as a secondary influence.
- Compare it against your life path. When the two numbers share a theme, it tends to show up consistently; when they differ, it often just means you experience yourself differently than you present outwardly — not a contradiction to resolve.
- Master numbers carry more intensity, not more importance. An expression number of 11 or 22 isn't "better" than a 5 or a 7 — just a more concentrated version of that number's themes.
